Tradition style Crock butter churns and dashers

The genealogy of churns has been interesting to study. In collecting information over these years one learns of many companies dabbled in making butter churns. Most likely there were several thousand plus companies that in some way lead to the making of Butter Churns after the ‘s and up into nearly the mid ‘s. Several of us serious churn collectors have did research at our respective State Libraries doing patent research. This research is time consuming but does give a lot of information. Some of the earliest patents we found in the mid ‘s and continued into the ‘s.

New Dazey churns have brought four figure prices across the United States. Of three new styles being made, the most troublesome has been a six-inch version which is being offered as a “salesman sample. There were several styles of glass Dazey churns made over the years. Collectors generally group the styles by distinctive features of the glass body such as overall shape or how words in the company name are arranged. The three new jars discussed in this article are the style called “round label” from the circular arrangement of the company name on the front of the jar. French faience is typically divided into two types. Petit feu low-fire faience, developed in the second half of the eighteenth century, refers to a process whereby the clay body is fired before being glazed and decorated with metallic oxides and then fired again at a lower temperature; pieces can also go through a third firing.

For my own part I am inclined to prefer the butter churned from cream, as being most economical, unless you chance to have Irish or Scotch servants who prefer buttermilk to new or sweet skimmed milk.
