The group is comprised of Andrew Marlin vocals, mandolin, guitar, and banjo and Emily Frantz vocals, violin, and guitar. They were gracious enough to speak to me before their show in Portland Oregon on their fall tour. This was less than a week after the release of their stellar album Blindfaller. They speak about playing, recording, and life on the road. Twangri-La: First I want to congratulate you on your new album, Blindfaller. It is fantastic. Mandolin Orange: Thank you.
Twangri-La: Some groups seem to hit that sophomore jinx after their first album, but you guys are on your fifth and you just seem to be getting better. What is your secret? Thank you. Emily: I think our secret was we set the bar really low in the beginning laughter. In all seriousness, in the beginning, we self-recorded a lot of stuff and we were learning about the recording process as we were recording our own records.
However, the other half of the duo, Emily Frantz, says she didn’t fully realize how prevalent that subject matter would be on the project until close to its completion. Frantz and Marlin, who are married, became parents while they were creating their new album. Still, the album-making process put Frantz in the peculiar position of being one half of a duo whose project focuses specifically on the other member’s experience.

The North Carolina duo have built a steady and growing fanbase with this kind of intimacy, and on Tides of A Teardrop , due out February 1, it is more potent than ever. You can hear the air between them—the taut space of shared understanding, as palpable as a magnetic field, that makes their music sound like two halves of an endlessly completing thought.
Singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz have honed this lamp glow intimacy for years. On Tides of A Teardrop , Marlin wrote the songs, as he usually does, in a sort of stream of consciousness, allowing words and phrases to pour out of him as he hunted for the chords and melodies.
After dating for five years, Andrew asked Kristen’s parents for her hand same day as one of their inspirations and favorites, Mandolin Orange.

Elephant Revival’s Daniel Rodriguez Goes Solo
Mandolin Orange are an Americana duo out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The group is comprised of Andrew Marlin (vocals, mandolin, guitar.
When progressive folk act Elephant Revival announced it was taking an indefinite hiatus last year, fans were shocked. The Nederland-born band was to play one last show at Red Rocks, and then the band members would go their separate ways. The group—known for employing lush harmonies, a washboard, and sometimes, interpretive dancers to round out its live shows—was a pioneer and mainstay of the Colorado music scene. For guitarist Daniel Rodriguez, the news was upsetting for personal reasons: It marked the end of his year relationship with his bandmate, multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Paine.
For Rodriguez, the hiatus that followed the breakup has meant adopting the lifestyle of a solo musician. Produced by multi-instrumentalist Darren Garvey, also of Elephant Revival, Rodriguez opted to release five tracks now and save an additional 10 for a full-length album to drop later this year. The songs are built on the poetry and warm croon Rodriguez has a reputation for, but they also contain a vulnerability that lends credence to the notion that pain can fuel art.
How would he describe the sound? Also in attendance will be the bulk of Elephant Revival, along with a handful of other surprise guests. As for his future with Elephant Revival, Rodriguez is guarded.

If you feel like every state has a Greenville, that’s because most do. There are 36 in the U. With a walkable city center, fabulous food offerings and abundant natural beauty, this is the little city that could. Greenville’s home turf is best known as the Upcountry, but the Cherokee version—the Great Blue Hills of God—is what really tips you off to the kind of terrain you’ll find here: a vast expanse of river- and cascade-laced mountains.
And while the foothills are gorgeous year-round, they turn jaw-dropping in spring, as dogwoods and azaleas get the blossom party started.

Today, the dialogue continues with an upcoming five-song EP, out February 7th, to be preceded by three singles and supported by a six-week tour. Dead Horses weave together a patchwork of classic and contemporary influences that span trad roots, indie-folk, and other experimental musical idioms. In its artistic continuum, Dead Horses has explored freeform musicality and thoroughly composed approaches. Thematically, the songs are personal, revelatory, and relatable, brimming with imaginative phrases, poetry, vulnerability, and a feeling of redemption.
Dead Horses is something of a fluid project centered around Sarah and Dan but throughout the years has welcomed other like-minded musicians for recording and touring. The band’s name is a loving tribute to a former friend of the band who passed away due to struggles with opioid abuse. Sarah and Dan met during post-college crossroads moments. Initially, the two resided in different musical spheres. Sarah was coming from a singer-songwriter vantage point; Dan had previously played in punk bands; but the two bonded over folk music and a shared upbringing in the church.
